With every passing day we find ourselves getting closer and closer to that magical day; DRAFT DAY! I‘m not even talking about the big draft in real life, I‘m referencing a fantasy. Whether it’s amongst league mates, through chats or on social media, we are all talking draft strategy. What’s this guy’s worth? How has free agency affected his stock? Is it a reach to get “my guy” in this round? For me, the two names that spring up the most among dynasty die-hards are Chicago Bears 2nd year signal caller, Mitchell Trubisky and fellow sophomore gun-slinger, Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs.
I‘m a fantasy gambler so I value players differently and make my own assessments, so readers beware….I love the hype! Of course the Wentz’s and Goff’s of the new wave will be gone. The old guard will be taken early enough with Brees, Rodgers and Brady. And after the steadfast guarantee of fantasy points from the Ryan’s and Stafford’s of the league; who’s left? We are talking dynasty, so the guys who just signed deals are always intriguing like Keenum and Alex Smith but I like the youth movement. I like the guys who organizations have made obvious comfort moves in building blocks and promise for their team.
After the free agency boom ended rather early, in my eyes two young guns stood out and had my radar up. The Bears made huge moves with Allen Robinson and Trey Burton and with a RB1 who’s dependable enough in Jordan Howard, you can’t help but gush with excitement if you add Trubisky in a league. Weapons like Cohen only make it more exciting and even if the sudden rumors of Howard being dealt are true, the Bears have already shown that they are committed to building a future around their guy and you KNOW they’ll look to make a splash come April’s NFL Draft.
We only saw limited play from the 6’2” rookie on a bad team with no REAL targets last season which brought 2,193 yards and 7 TD’s to 7 Int’s in 2017 after sitting behind Mike Glennon to start the year. But go back to Trubisky’s junior year at North Carolina which was enough to have Chicago give a small ransom to move one spot in last years draft. Starting all 13 games in 2016, Trubisky tossed 30 scores to only 6 interceptions and had a 68% completion percentage. New targets, new coaching staff and leadership skills that were enough to cough up two 3rd and one 4th round picks, only lead me to believe Mitch’s stock should be going way up.
The other part of the hype train that I’ve got a ticket for lies in KC with Mahomes. What you’ve done lately is usually what matters most but garbage time that brings 284 yards and a pick is not what I see in this case. Mahomes was selected 10th overall, again after a bevy of picks were sent to acquire his position. In his final year this kid, in a notable pass heavy offense at Texas Tech put up huge numbers. Stats that every time I look at them leave me howling like a cartoon wolf while my eyes bulge out. 5,052 Drew Brees-like yards and 41 touchdowns and he can move around in the pocket and will be able to create in an offense that boasts speed and more speed.
In this same offense; that you can only imagine will stay very similar, Alex Smith torched defenses for over 4,000 yards to go along with 26 scores through the air. I’m a stat guy so in my head, I look at Smith’s success and what Mahomes was able to do in college and I’m seeing pure FANTASY gold. With his supporting cast that lists a few guys that are pretty fantasy formidable as well with Hunt, Hill, Kelce, the returning Spencer Ware and newly acquired Sammy Watkins; Mahomes and his prototypical QB build at 6’2” and 230 lbs will have me reaching sky high for QB and I‘m sure I’ll be quite satisfied with the result. Buy, buy, BUY!
