The Eagles started the week by surprisingly cutting LB Mychal Kendrick. Kendrick filled in well when others were injured last season as the Eagles fought for the title in January. But in the Jim Schwartz system Mychal was never an exact fit. It would have been nice if the Eagles were able to move him for something of value, but with only around 300,000 in cap space the birds needed to free up something to begin contact talks with the guys they plan to keep going forward. Within hours though the Eagles suffered their first injury issue for the season when fellow LB Paul Worrilow was lost for the season. This happened when Worrilow and another player collided knee to knee, Paul tore his ACL and will gone for the year. Last bit of LB news, with these two notes the Eagles signed UDFA Kyle Wilson from Alabama State.
Staying with the defensive side of the ball 4th round pick DL Josh Sweat is reportedly looking very fast in the first few sessions of the year. This is a guy that like Ajayi has degenerative knee concerns. When healthy though Josh has shown early round potential. Sydney Jones was the one who started team drills as the nickel corner. After having to sit out last year with an injury Jones is looking to help make the Eagles DB corps one of the best in the league with Jalen Mills and Ronald Darby on the outside.
Now to the side of the ball most dynasty players are interested in. Carson Wentz is already back to working in positional drills. Taking snaps and dropping back giving handoffs and making throws. He is reportedly planting on his recently injured knee. He is running between drills as well. While this is great news as far as his recovery is concerned but he is not cutting and until the doctors say the knee is healthy enough to withstand a hit don’t plan on Carson being a fantasy option right away. Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles threw a pair of picks in the first day of OTA’s but knocking some rust off after a couple months away is to be expected. What should be noted is 3rd string QB Nate Sudfeld also started slowly with some errant passes going to the defense. This is news because with the depth of the RB and DL, if Carson is healthy enough to begin the season the Eagles may choose to only carry two QBs. Last thing I have this week is Donnel Pumphrey has spent some time in the weight room adding some muscle. This may help the pint sized RB durability. But those in person at OTA practice have said that Donnel has a change of direction that no other back on the team has of those with the team now. I wouldn’t expect Pumphrey to see more then a few carries a game between the tackles at most, but getting him in space could be something Doug Pederson will be planning on doing against defenses this next season.
I will be attempting to put out a weekly update to this team focused article, look forward to bringing you guys the inside scoop on the defending SUPER BOWL CHAMPIONS!!
